Animals in our Zoo - Primates

Wat maak van ‘n dier ‘n primaat?

What makes an animal a primate?

There is no obvious, single trait that defines primates, but the group instead shares a set of features that vary from one species to the next.

Sulke kenmerke sluit in:

  • 'n verkorte bek (snoet)
  • oog kaste wat omring is deur been

 Such traits include a:

  • shortened rostrum
  • eye sockets (orbits) that are encircled by bone
  • forward facing eyes that enable binocular vision and depth perception
  • five fingers with fingernails on each prehensile hand
  • opposable thumbs
  • unfused bones in forearms and hind limbs
    • Forearm -> radius and ulna
    • Hind limbs -> tibia and fibula
  • prehensile tail
    • Up to one-third of underside at
tip of tail consists of bare skin
(looks like the palm of a dark hand) with even a pattern of tiny ridges, like a fingerprint
    • Lot of muscles, which makes it strong

 HABITAT

Meeste primaat spesies lewe in die trope of subtrope, alhoewel ‘n klein hoeveelheid, merklik mense, ook in gematigde areas woon.  Behalwe vir ‘n paar telluries spesies woon ape hoofsaaklik in bome.

Most primate species live in the tropics or subtropics, although a few, most notably humans, also inhabit temperate regions.  Except for a few terrestrial species, primates are arboreal.

 Klassifikasie (2 Groepe)

Classification (2 Groups)

Strepsirrhini or “before apes”, have few similarities to humans, and are mostly small and nocturnal. All found in the Old World only. The species in this group include the Ring-tailed lemur in the Bloemfontein Zoo.

Haplorrhini or higher primates (Anthropoidea) are larger and diurnal. Comprise apes (no tails) and monkeys (nearly all have tails). Two groups New World and Old World.  New World: are all monkeys and include the Tufted capuchins and Black-handed spider monkeys in the Bloemfontein Zoo.  Old World: comprise monkeys, apes and humans. Bigger and spend more time on the ground. The Vervet Monkeys, Gibbons (lesser Ape), Chimpanzees and humans (Greater Apes) in the Bloemfontein Zoo is in this group.
